Investigating the Impact of B. infantis EVC001 in Preterm Infants

Working with a leading neonatal research team, we employed our targeted metabolomics approach to specifically analyze human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) in a study of preterm infants supplemented with B. infantis EVC001. Our precise HMO quantification methods revealed that infants receiving the probiotic showed dramatically enhanced HMO metabolism, with nearly 250-fold lower fecal HMO levels compared to controls, indicating superior utilization. Using complementary metagenomic analysis, it was confirmed that genes for HMO metabolism were abundant in the EVC001 group but absent in controls. The targeted metabolomics data demonstrated a strong negative correlation between B. infantis abundance and HMO levels, providing clear mechanistic insight into the probiotic’s functionality. This research has influenced nutritional approaches in multiple NICUs and established a foundation for ongoing studies examining long-term developmental outcomes in vulnerable preterm infants.
