Pieter C. Dorrestein, PhD is Scientific Co-Founder of Arome Science, providing strategic scientific guidance in mass spectrometry, molecular networking, spatial metabolomics, and microbiome-related chemistry. His work focuses on developing tools to study the chemical language of living systems, including molecular interactions between microbes, hosts, and their environments.
Dr. Dorrestein is a Professor at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), where he serves as Director of the Collaborative Mass Spectrometry Innovation Center and Co-Director of the Institute for Metabolomics Medicine. He is also a key developer of the Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) platform, an open-access mass spectrometry ecosystem used for organizing, sharing, analyzing, and annotating MS/MS data.
His research spans mass spectrometry-based molecular mapping, imaging mass spectrometry, microbiome chemistry, genome mining, small-molecule structure elucidation, and computational approaches for interpreting untargeted metabolomics data. His work has helped expand how scientists study molecular exchange, microbial metabolism, and the chemical complexity of biological systems.
At Arome Science, Dr. Dorrestein’s scientific perspective supports the company’s work in computational metabolomics, molecular networking, and multi-omics integration. His guidance helps shape analytical approaches that enable biotech, pharma, and academic partners to extract clearer biological meaning from complex metabolomics studies.
